- The blades can harm magical and non-magical beings alike but cannot harm Jason. The blades along with the tattoos are slightly warm to the touch.

- If you listen closely, you can hear the blades humming softly to the rhythm of Jason’s heartbeat.

- The bands around his wrists act as cuffs chaining the blades to him and him to the blades binding him down to the soul.

- The circles on his hands and wrists rest over acupuncture points that link to the heart and the one of his chest rests over his heart.

started reading robin 2021 and i wanted to take the time to appreciate two of the most beautiful spreads in issue #1. they captivated me with how gorgeous and momentous they felt, which must have been the point bc i ended up staring at them sm that the symbolism finally kicked in

SPREAD 1:

1) LOVE the red and green at play, it’s such a difficult color scheme to get right lest you end up making the whole piece feel like a christmas card, but gleb melnikov pulled it off. the environment is rich and elegant and well-contrasted; it rly brings out damian’s classic red/green robin combo, even tho he’s not actually wearing his robin suit here. the green of his clothing highlights the green of talia’s, as well as the assassin’s tattoos, and, when combined with the cool-toned background, makes the red just pop out at you. pretty palette aside, it’s a very calculated choice in colors.

2) speaking of red, melnikov rly wanted you to notice the blood in these two pages. from the emphasis of the words DEMON BLOOD to the reflection of damian in the blood puddle, it only draws attention to the fact that his blade is perfectly clean of it in the second panel. one can only assume that talia killed that guy so hard that damian’s sword was caught in the collateral (damn talia !). it frames damian as the one to land the killing blow, as though his doubts/restraint with killing mean nothing because he still has the blood on his hands, blood passed down from talia. that doesn’t necessarily make it true ofc, but it does give us a reflection of his mindset with the blood acting as a literal mirror.

now before we delve into the second spread, lemme preface this with some context: many characters will refer to damian as an actual bird (“what better way to take out a robin than with a hawke,” “i’ve fought little birds like you before,” etc.) which speaks to his reputation, but i think it’s most notable when coming from talia:

at first, it’s used condescendingly, as it usually is from most ppl, and she speaks in a possessive tone when she talks abt returning him to the nest. she even tells him that if he IS to be taken under her wing, she would not treat him as her son but as a weapon. however, we know that this contradicts her intentions as she later uses the same “baby bird” petname as a term of endearment, even to calling him her son—notably when he is out of earshot.

you get the sense that they have this unspoken code of conduct around each other—family dynamics tend to be rigid in that way—but there’s also this feeling of regret as well as unfamiliarity navigating it coming from talia. i mean, she said it herself: damian was just a baby bird. he flew out of the nest too early.*

so why does she taunt him for running back to his mother? why is she pushing him away? and why does she monologue for so long that she lets her guard down and closes her eyes long enough for him to disappear…?

SPREAD 2:

BECAUSE DAMIAN IS JUMPING OUT OF THE HELICOPTER!!! BECAUSE TALIA IS PUSHING HIM OUT OF THE NEST !!!!

talia doubled down on her militaristic plans as an opening for damian to leave. with that sense of regret mentioned earlier, talia knows she raised damian under harsh conditions, but she doesn’t know to raise him differently either, so she urges him to find his own path. presenting “the way of the demon or the way of the bat” as the only 2 options to her already rebellious son was guaranteed sabotage. she pushed him too early when he was younger, but she knows that her baby bird is ready to fly now :”)

bonus: what a classic jason todd move to wear a mask underneath your mask btw. guess it just runs in the family! (but on a deeper, unironic level, damian switches out both his robin and his demon suit into this new one. this obviously symbolizes his forging a new path, but also reveals his intent/doubts abt the whole confrontation. a mask underneath his mask? he was never truly looking to rejoin the league. after running away from bruce, he runs to talia to test the waters and see if he would do better there. and when it ends in the same shadowing of an ambitious parent, he ditches the whole thing. the fact that he had a back-up plan meant that his heart wasn’t in it, just as talia’s heart wasn’t in keeping him caged. a confirmation bias given permission by a mother’s facade. god, the al ghul mindgames are truly smth to behold)

*so much can be said abt how talia’s approach to parenting parallels and contrasts bruce’s. they both have the same good intentions for their son, and they both realize that he’s too young to face what he had and what he’s abt to. but talia wants to start the healing process of her control in his upbringing, and bruce wants to prevent damian from having to face it alone knowing firsthand what suffering he “endured to become batman.” one is letting go, the other is desperate to bring him back.

it’s such a fascinating look into the push and pull of their fatal flaws and mistakes as parents, as well as making them feel human and reasonable within the limits of all they know and are capable of. OF COURSE they’re overcompensating for their regrets, that’s just so… them!

and the fact that you can see both parents’ traits and influence in damian as he searches for his own identity just makes the whole family feel well-rounded. robin 2021 is so good you guys, it’s too fucking good

the lost praetor's lost memories

by the heavens, why did they have to be so rowdy? the skinny, anemic boy thought as he sneered and rolled his eyes. like all the other romans, he was beyond ecstatic for the return of his praetor– the true praetor, not that fraud perseus jackson. but was he screaming his lungs out at the mere sight of jason? no, he wasn’t. he was too dignified for such a brutish act. his peers would do better if they learned from him.

octavian, looking up at the ship in the sky— argos ii, it was called—spotted the lost praetor immediately.

wearing an orange shirt, devoid of any lavish medals, capes, or decorations.. by the gods, what had the greeks done to his praetor? they ruined his beloved prince with their simpleminded clothing; he didn’t have at least one war medal pinned to his chest!

octavian thought the cheering of the crowd couldn’t get any louder, yet he was proven wrong when the ship landed in its designated spot in front of the forum. by the gods, it was as if all the mandrakes in the world had been teleported to new rome and began to yell out their agonizing screams.

“roman people!” reyna finally yelled out. “compose yourselves!” in an instant, the romans collectively calmed down. reyna’s wrath was one they did not wish to experience, and for good reason.

the crew of the argo ii stepped out of the ship and were shown the way to the forum, where they were to have dinner together with the roman officials regarding the threat that the earth goddess posed.

octavian ignored all attempts of the graeci to talk to him. he had his eyes on nobody but his beloved jason. he could see it now— they’d abandon the dinner and run to their usual spot in the woods and have a picnic of their own. a picnic where they wouldn’t feel as if they needed to uphold their respective performances as the praetor and augur. a picnic that would make octavian forget all the sleepless nights he spent worrying about jason. a reunion so sweet it would make them both forget about the end of the world. and octavian would be vulnerable with him for once, telling jason how he truly felt. and jason would reciprocate his feelings for him. the scene would be so sweet and beautiful that they would forget all their troubles.

“my dear praetor,” he smiled and bowed to jason, though the boy before him didn’t seem to notice him, for he was too busy marveling at the architecture. 

“hm?” finally, jason noticed him. “oh, hi! what’s your name?”

“..you.. don’t remember me..?” octavian said, his voice barely a whisper.

why did it hurt? why did those three words sting like a stab wound to the chest? why did octavian feel tears prickling at his eyes?

“i’m sorry, i really don’t..” jason said. “am i supposed to know who you are?”

octavian’s mouth wired itself shut. he spent weeks at a time, losing his sanity trying to form a connection to the upper realm to ask them of jason’s whereabouts.. and jason didn’t. remember. him.

he didn’t know whether to cry or to yell. perhaps he should kiss him, to make him remember all the secret picnics they held in that meadow in the forest surrounding new rome. to make him forget that girl he had been holding hands with when they stepped out the ship. yes, that could work. it was the work of those abominable graeci scum, washing away all that made jason himself, making him forget all the joys he shared with octavian. octavian’s kiss would be the solution. the cure for the curse.

but jason was different now– a different haircut, a different hair colour, different clothes, no formal and professional symbols on his body that screamed out to the world that he was a proud son of rome besides his legion tattoo. by the gods, he even had glasses now, and instead of wielding a spear he wielded a sword. this was not octavian’s jason. this was not the boy he fell in love with.

“i... seem to have mistaken you for someone else. forgive me.”

Please tell me how Roy’s characterisation was massacred for N52.

I understand how Jason and Roy’s relationship can be annoying where Roy never questions Jason and just follows him around blindly, never second guessing him. Roy is hard on himself and lacks self esteem and so thinks highly of Jason when really he should be angry, maybe even jealous of the power (all caste magic) Jason has. Then i get confused because I’d think someone going through a bout of depression and self hate and self medicating would have low self esteem and would think everyone is better than them and that they are a fuck up so isn’t that accurate portrayal of how awful Roy’s situation is?? Doesn’t that show the way Roy struggles just as he has pre N52?

Additionally Jason always compliments Roy on his greatness and abilities (Not in person which is annoying because grr he has to be manly and can’t compliment a friend) but in his little thought bubbles he’s always talking about how great Roy is and how grateful he is to have him.

Now this is where I get more confused because surely Roy respects Jason and through Jason’s monologues he clearly respects Roy though he may not say it out loud. The point is, people exaggerate so much how Roy is used as a crutch for Jason to look cool but Jason is constantly mentioning Roy and how important he is for the team. (Though I won’t deny there are times he may call him a goofball or undermine him but I mean cmon it’s literally ‘Red Hood’ and the outlaws, not ‘Titans’ where they’re equals, so it’s understandable that Jason would have swords and magic and stuff and save the day whilst Roy is not the main character). Idk I just haven’t noticed Roys character being MASSACRED when he’s with Jason.

People say Roy’s biggest trauma is having to be with Jason but I don’t know why that’s so bad like don’t just say it’s shit writing, fucking give me the evidence. (Sorry for the rant no offense to you what so ever). If the writing is so bad then blame the writer idk why Jason gets so much hate.

Anyway, please tell me how and why Rhato is the worst comics because I don’t think it’s that bad personally and I’d get shit for saying that.

Okay im gonna start this off by saying I think your looking at this the wrong way, your treating RHATO as just a stand alone story and if you want to know why people hate it you have to look at it in the broader context of it being a continuation of three different characters stories bc that is what it is - kory Roy and Jason are all pre established characters with rich backgrounds and personalities that have been building up for decades if you ignore these histories your gonna get push back from fans and Lobdell actually took it one step further

I'm gonna be short and sweet with this bc people more knowledgeable about roys character can put it way better then me but lets get straight to the point - the reason why people say Roy harper was massacred in RHATO is bc his whole character was changed- his back story, his relationships, his addiction, a lot of his personality and hell even his tattoos were changed and changed for the worse as a lot of it seemed to get done just to better suit Jason who was also changed a lot by lobdell but not to the extent that Roy was - a lot of it comes off like lobdell didn't even bother to read any comics with Roy in them before he decided to try and shove him into a role that wasn't suited for him which if your a long time Roy fan watching a character you adore get a complete overhaul just so he fits with the character the author uses as a self insert your gonna be a wee bit agitated

When your writing stories in the dc universe you have to be careful as a lot of these characters are main characters in their own right when they team up together sure you can focus on one more then the others but you have to be at least abit aware of each of the characters your including back stories motivations and personalities and what lobdell did was use the fact that the new 52 just happened as an excuse to create whole new characters with the same names as these much loved pre established characters and this rightfully pissed off a lot of people who loved these characters especially bc the things that happened in the n52 have had a lasting effect as these are the comics newer fans are reading and if your favourite character has been given a complete overhaul into a character you no longer recognise too bad a lot of people are gonna go forward only seeing Roy as Jason Todd's side character the guy in the baseball cap

Hating that old design

But yes absolutely I can! It’ll all be under the cut because I’ve got a LOT to say about the design and lore of the swords

To start with the thought behind my original design was that the tattoos would disappear when the swords were summoned meaning that the tattoos weren’t just tattoo but the actual swords. A cool concept but my execution was NOT it and it’s just not my vibe.

I went back after that first design and looked through everything we know about the All-Blades for my redesign and this is all the information we get.

The blades are mystical and made of copper

Designed to kill magical beings and cannot harm anything else

Can only be summoned in the presence of absolute evil

Are powered by the wielder’s soul and blood

Can be summoned at will

Multiple swords and blades can be summoned depending on how much soul the wielder has

Some of this I liked, such as being powered by the user’s life essence, and some not so much, like only being summoned in ‘Absolute Evil’. Boringgggg and also limiting. So I made my own lore for a new design.

I wanted to lean heavy into the soul and blood aspect so the tattoos are a deep red brown like dried blood, and wrap around both wrists and his left arm in organic flowing lines. There are points on his finger, wrist, and chest that are highlighted with a little circle target design and those are actually acupuncture points that link directly back to the heart.

The only inorganic element are the solid bars that wrap around both wrists and they’re to represent the fact that the Blades are tied to Jason and him to them. They’re quite literally cuffs he cannot remove.

The cross guards are copper and the stone used as the pommel is a Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, which aside from being pretty are said to increase courage and motivation and benefit endurance along with physical strength.

My own lore of the Blades is this:

The All-Blades are powered by his soul and blood [and can be directly pulled from his own blood] though summoning too frequently will leave Jason weak and light headed as the blades draw the copper from his blood.

The blade portion of the sword is a solid manifestation of his soul [similar to Lantern constructs] and are warm to the touch. Depending on how much ‘soul’ he’s got, the sharper the blades will be.

Both the Blades and tattoos will glow when used or Jason is using magic, and hum and pulse softly to the rhythm of his heartbeat.

The Blades are able to harm magical and non-magical beings alike, though cannot harm Jason.

They can be ‘broken’ and will disappear when shattered. This hurts Jason and, depending on the severity, can manifest as a physical wound on his body.

It takes concentration and magical energy for him to maintain the Blades in physical form for extended periods of time and will get smaller as his energy tires out before disappearing.

He only has two Blades, they can change shape, design, and size and can be summoned together or individually.

Ok, but one thing I'm genuinely thinking about including in my fanfic is Jason's magic sword things.

I've seen a Tik Tok where a person talks about Jason's magic swords, which I did not know was a thing? He has a tattoo of them apparently and it's never been mentioned ever again other than in a few comics or something? And the person was saying how it would have been interesting if Jason was the only member of the Batfam that had a more Magical presence? And honestly I totally agree!

So I might just add that just because. Like it's probably not gonna be a big part of my fic's plot or anything, it could be like just a Jason thing.

I would need to do more research.

So anyways, I wanted to talk about Peter's character going forward.

When Peter ends up in Gotham City he is incredibly angry and confused. His Spidey Sense is incredibly loud. Peter is alone and angry and sad. He basically died, and now he realizes that Spider-Man might get a funeral and be mourned for, but Peter Parker will never get that. No one knows Peter Parker. For two whole years Peter kept his distance from everyone. Made no friends. No one remembers him. He'll definitely have a breakdown.

Well maybe he would right then and there bit idk. Anyways, I want him to end up in CRIME ALLEY!!!

Obviously this is after he realizes he died and ended up in another dimension.

I want Peter to be roaming Gotham by himself for like a month at least? Before the reunion happens lol.

When he is reunited with May, Ben, Mary, and Richard, he's definitely gonna think Quentin Beck is back and yeahhh he's rlly gonna go through it.

Eventually when everyone is settled and reintroductions are made, Peter is gonna be super overprotective. He's also gonna quit being Spider-Man for a while. He just wants to spend time with his family. Eventually he will end up being Spider-Man again, with the encouragement of his family.

He's gonna be extra protective of May and Ben, and be rlly awkward around his mom and dad, but still protective of them.

When Peter goes back to being Spider-Man, he's gonna immediately grab the attention of the Batclan.

He's gonna have a negative relationship with them immediately lmao.

The rouges are gonna have a hard time XD

I also want to have some of Peter's rogues be originally from the DC universe. Idk who to add tho.

I love the idea of Jason Grace in the Lost Hero who's distrustful and taking things into his own hands.

Because he realises that everyone around him keeps feeding him lies.

That he's Leo's best friend, that he's Pipers boyfriend. That he's a son of Zeus. Jason doesn't know the truth but he instinctively knows that they're lying to him.

He's also smarter than people realise and starts putting together things that don't add up.

He has lighting powers but his skill set isn't the same as his sister Thalia (their familial tie being the only thing he's been told that Jason believes is true.)

He doesn't know any Greek but can speak Latin. He instinctively calls Greek deities by their Roman names.

Also if he just found out who he is, than why does Chiron know he's already been claimed?

And most glaringly, why does he have a coin in his pocket that can turn into a sword? A coin that has Julius Ceaser's face on it.

Julius Ceaser who's very famously Roman.

Also Jason has an SPQR tattoo that he somehow knows means the Senātus Populusque Rōmānus aka the Senate and the People of Rome.

So Jason's very fucking sure that he's not Greek like everyone keeps telling him. His memories may say otherwise but Jason doesn't know anything about himself other than his name.

So he just stops trusting those memories or relying on them for information.

Just the idea of Hera's plan being to build trust and instead because of what happened to Jason, he doesn't trust anyone.

Except Thalia because she's the only person who isn't lying to him. No one except Chiron is doing it on purpose of course but Jason doesn't know that.

He's a great cook. He taught himself to cook tasty and nutritious food for Zain.

He's a great singer. He used to sing lullabies to Zain when he was a baby. You can find him humming to himself while he cooks.

He's mildly allergic to cats. He starts tearing up and sniffling every time he's around one. Will he still pet every cat he comes across? Yes.

After the events of HoA, he got a tattoo of a sword on his fore arm to remember what happened that night. He also got it on his arm to remember Jason because he had tattoos.

Salim used to smoke, but when his wife left, he promised himself to quit for Zain. He still keeps the lighter to remind him what he's fighting for.

You left the papers you were reading on top of the wooden desk, the red comfy chair made an unpleasant sound as you stretched your back, a deep sigh leaving your lips once you took a look at the conversation you just had until your phone's screen went black. The day was gray, it was raining and the outlaws were staying at home after tiring weeks of consecutive missions, it was your first day at home after the chimera case but you didn't have time to rest or probably, being in the studio surrounded by screens, maps and documents with intel was better than facing reality.

You haven't seen his face since last night. You arrived late, beaten, exhausted, your energy just let you say "hello", take a shower and go to sleep but oh, how wonderful it was to see those blue eyes again. Seeing Bizarro and Artemis was great too, however, seeing Jason fine and alive sitting on the big leather couch while playing video games with his bothers online was everything you needed, it was the definition of "home is not a place, home is the people you always return to." . Once Jason saw you he stood up forgetting about his game, approached in such slow motion that it hurt and then took your sword out of your tired hands, then did the same with the gadgets in your head and face.

"Long journey, eh?" He hesitated in the last part opening and closing his pale pink lips, licked them briefly and didn't say anything else, just offered a smile. If you were dating someone else, that James, he should stop calling you "Preciosa", "bonita" or any other variations. It sucked, it made him feel frustrated but who was him to do something about it and claim you as his? He didn't even know if that's what he wanted. The thought made him frown, his eyes focused on the living room's huge window instead of you, he was lying to himself but that was nothing new.

"Yes..." You could barely keep your eyes open but your smitten smile was intact, it was always like that when he was close, that night he looked specially cute with his typical red hoodie, gray pants and messy, extra messy hair, you couldn't help yourself. Your mind started running wild imagining coming back home to hug and kiss him, how you missed those juicy lips.

"Then you should go to sleep, Flores." A feminine voice interrupted the moment. The redhead amazon spoke from the white kitchen counter, she was drinking tea or coffee, you weren't sure. "you look awful."

"I fought a chimera. Don't tell me they don't exist, they do and are huge." You answered in an attempt to sound funny and then walked heavily towards your room after saying "good night" to your teammates.

Shaking your head you focused on the present just in time to see Bizarro offering you a cup of tea, you wondered how such big man entered the studio so quietly "You're not coming with me. You don't need to rest."

"Okay, okay big boy." You smiled following him to the living room that despite its size looked small thanks to the glass containers with Artemis, Jason and your suits, your house was particular. "How have you been, B?" You decided to focus on your kryptonian friend instead of the man training in the next room.

Your cheeks turned red by the sudden exchange with James, Kath gave him your number and he didn't hesitate to text and be adorable, he seemed like a good boy indeed. You smiled almost excited for the date, you've been wanting a new tattoo for so long...

Jason, who just finished his training was leaving the training room wearing only his Wonder Woman shorts and a towel on his shoulders, he seemed irritated, the training room was small, actually the place was small for people like him or Bizarro to live comfortably, but Bizarro seemed very content spending his time on the couch that, again, was too small for him. Jason raised his black and perfectly shaped eyebrow at the sight of you sitting beside him, smiling to your phone with bright excited eyes. His irritation growing significantly.

Did you ever smiled like that when he texted you? the truth Jason choose to ignore was the fact that you smiled like that whenever you saw him, whenever you talk to him or about him, whenever he called, whenever he texted, whenever he was mentioned, just like he found out years ago in that conversation he shouldn't have eavesdropped but he did anyways.
