The Stuff

Killer ice cream? You’d think that would be one of the worst ideas in horror film history, but in the hands of Larry Cohen, THE STUFF (1985, YouTube, Plex) comes off as an almost inspired satire of consumerism and the drive to convince people that “Enough is never enough.” It’s sheer pulp, but with such a loopy energy it’s easy to forgive its few weak scenes (Cohen was a great idea man who often couldn’t film a simple scene of two people talking) and the continuity lapses created when New World removed 30 minutes from the director’s cut. Cohen’s satirical aim can get a little broad at times. It may be hard to stomach the thought that humanity’s hope lies in the hands of a paranoid militia leader (Paul Sorvino) in Georgia, a state that here earns my nickname for it, “Stupidvania.”

In their second of five projects together (four features and one TV episode), Cohen’s muse, Michael Moriarty, is an industrial spy hired by a conglomerate of ice cream manufacturers to investigate The Stuff, an addictive, low-calorie desert that’s pushing them out of the market. At the same time, suburban kid Jason Bloom notices the product can move on its own and realizes his parents and brother (Bloom’s real-life brother Brian) are so addicted to it they can no longer think for themselves. He and Moriarty join forces with the ad exec (Andrea Marcovicci) who sold it to America and set out to uncover the secrets behind The Stuff and warn the world before what everybody’s been eating eats them.

Cohen’s film is delightfully off-the-wall, starting with Moriarty’s largely improvised performance as a man who plays dumb (and Southern) to get info that might be withheld from a smarter man. As in their first film together, Q: THE WINGED SERPENT (1982), Moriarty makes something charming out of a potentially irritating character. It’s a treat watching him con the foolish and connect with the wise. Marcovicci doesn’t get as many opportunities to shine (a scene developing their relationship was among the cuts), but she has moments of wit in dealing with the crazies they encounter and makes running from The Stuff in heels a comic comment on horror-film improbabilities. There’s also a nice turn by Garrett Morris as “Chocolate Chip” Charlie, a cookie magnate whose business has been taken over by The Stuff’s distributors. Eric Bogosian cameos as a supermarket employee, and Patrick Dempsey figures in the final scene. Even Cohen couldn’t tell you where a very young Mira Sorvino turns up (she did a bit while visiting her father on set). A big highlight are the commercials for the product, featuring the likes of Tammy Grimes, Brooke Adams, Abe Vigoda and, best of all, Clara Peller, demanding “Where’s the Stuff?”

Attention Batman fans: I got a quilt on the go!

I found a Batman panel and decided to make some blocks to go around it. Then I saw a pattern by Cozy Quilt Designs that looked like bats and went: yes. that one, that pattern will work perfectly. I have some sample blocks made up for Dick, Jason, Duke, and Damian. I have fabric waiting to be cut for Tim, Cass, and Steph.

If everything goes according to plan, this should end up about 80” wide and 90” long, so a queen size quilt. Which was not the original plan lmao. I was gonna do something small and quick, a lap quilt for the couch, then things kinda ran away on me.

Anyway. We’ll see how it turns out!

I kinda wanna write a story that’s like a crossover between all of my favourite fandoms and like there’s this girl who can jump between different realities and helps them all do stuff but I’m kind of a bad writer but it would help me improve my writing, so should I?

Honestly, one of the worst mistakes an author can make is to simply have the main couple break up, dying is fine, but breaking up? Especially for the dumbest reason of all, After four or five development books??? Simply because you don't like them anymore. This is very disrespectful to the fans.

We have some exceptions like Max and Chloe from Life is Strange. With two endings where Chloe dies as a heroine or survives at the expense of thousands of people, this ending honestly doesn't make sense to me, Chloe begs Max to save her mother, Did people really think they would live happily ever after after all this? Chloe could never forgive her own mother for her father's death, and she knows it wasn't her fault, now imagine having to live with Max knowing that she refused to save her, it makes a lot of sense that she left her, love isn't enough.

Now we have Jacob and Emma from Peculiar Children and Jason and Piper from Heroes of Olympus. Of course Emma wasn't over her ex but it was okay because she and Jacob got 3 books for a discount, I definitely loved them so much, the breakup was repetitive and meaningless, especially with Jacob quickly not caring about her anymore and falling in love with Noor, I liked them but I always hoped that Jacob would go back to Emma in the end.

Jason and Piper literally got a glimpse of their future life together, how can Rick break them up? Especially with us not even seeing it happening, they also had so much development in 5 books and it was all thrown in the trash.He then put the final nail in the coffin by making Jason die and Piper get with a random girl. I will never forgive.

Okay hear me out a Dear Evan Hansen AU in which Eddie never sent the letter to Jason to become pen pals because he gets cold feet so he hides the finished letter in the drawer instead.

Months past and one day while looking for something in said drawer and throwing it's content out on the counter he accidentally leaves the letter in the open where Aunt Marla finds it and mistakenly sends it out.

This is right after Jason's death, so when Alfred finds the letter him and Bruce assume that Eddie and Jason were secretly being friends this whole time (If you read the first letter he sends in Blue Devil #19 it starts with "Dear Pen Pal" and reads very much as if they had been writing for a while, even though Jason's response let's us know that was not the case). Bruce decides to pays him a visit and Eddie panicking because (Batman!!!???) lies through his teeth about how him and Jason were best friends and they wrote so many letters and talked on the phone for ages and why yes he would love to go to the manor and tell Bruce and Alfred all about it.

And he should tell them the truth, but then Nightwing and the rest of the Titans also want to meet him? And he gets to hang out in the tower and they help him with the training and it's all that he ever wanted.

Zoe: now this is tricky but I was thinking to just throw out the romance and make it be Dick becoming and older brother/mentor figure instead?

With Jared and Alana I'm still thinking and taking suggestions if anyone has them. (Maybe Tim still in training helping Eddie out bc he sees that hearing stories about Jason help Bruce deal with the grief? But then he starts to get jealous)

I'm also still wondering how to include Dan and James.
